Dear Friend,
Making a rag quilt was the furthest thing from her mind when Ellen entered her local quilt shop. She was in search of a fun, light-hearted quilt that she could make for her son who was leaving for college.
She immediately went over to the quilt patterns and books to begin her search. As she explored the possibilities, a picture of a rag quilt jumped out at her. It was perfect! The quilt was made from 8” squares and all of the seams were on the outside, so you couldn’t really tell whether they matched or not.
Ellen is a beginning quilter, and she decided that this quilt looked so easy to make that she could probably make it by herself. She bought the fabric and a book with the rag quilt pattern in it, and headed home.
Later that evening, she called me, almost in tears. The rag quilt instructions in the book were so confusing, she couldn’t figure out where to begin.
We decided that sewing a rag quilt together would be our weekend project, and we would work on it until it was complete. Her son was leaving in two weeks, and we figured that with both of us working, the quilt could be made in the weekend.
She was right. The instructions were very unclear. It was a good thing that we had the rag quilt pictures to guide us. Other than that, we would have been completely lost.
That weekend, we sewed, ripped and re-sewed. We wasted fabric since we cut some of the pieces the wrong size. And it took much longer than it should have. We laughed and we kept going.
